Sometimes you’ve just got to run

So I’m playing co-ed softball with my wife who is better than me (she played in college). We are filling in on her uncle’s team because some people who signed up to play decided later that they couldn’t. Since the rosters had already been turned in to the rec department before we were asked to play, I have to be “David” when we play. It’s only slightly awkward that the real David’s wife plays and that she refers to me as her husband.

Anyway, last week they had me batting ninth. We have to bat guy-girl and we were short one girl who should have batted after me in the 10-spot. So we had to take an out every time after me. So when I batted with two outs, I had to just keep running the bases because the inning would be over when the play was done. I hit a decent single, ran to second on an error, and kept trucking to third base even though the ball was in the infield. They threw me out of course.

The funny thing was that hardly anyone watching knew why I kept running when I would obviously get out. They thought I was stupid. That I was a bad softball player (probably true). They laughed and so did I.

But I knew I had to keep running. To keep pressing on. To try and make it to home plate. Even if I looked stupid. After all, if I stopped, we were done.

Sometimes you’ve just got to keep running. To keep making decisions. To keep making progress.

Even if no one else knows why. Even if it makes you look stupid.
