I find it interesting that you have not read a saved person referred to as a sinner except in the past tense. I'm not suprised by it, just find it interesting. Until recent years, I would have given lip service to being a sinner, but honestly, I did not give it much thought. But a few years ago God confronted me with my sin in a dramatic way. I have never been the same. That was when I really recognized how awful I was and how much God really loved me anyway. It was when I learned about grace. This was a major mile-marker in my life.

It has been from that point in my life that I have also learned about sanctification (something I never heard, to my knowledge, preached and taught growing up--but that could be because I spent a lot to Sundays playing tic-tac-toe on the bulletin). By being drawn closer to Jesus, I see my sin more clearly. Like Isaiah when he saw Jesus in Isaiah 6, I realize I am a man of unclean lips. I see the need for repentance in my own life more and more (this is not fun).

As a result, my identity in Christ is one of hope and joy. And hopefully, humility.

I like the way Mark Driscoll says it, "You are worse than you ever thought. You are loved more than you could ever imagine. That is the Gospel." That pretty much sums up how Jesus has changed my identity.

Was that a long and circular enough answer? I hope it makes sense. Its 12:35 am while I'm writing. Thanks for the comments!!

Andy--An alliterative 3-point outline? Spoken like a true southern preacher :). But very true and very wise. And easy to remember.

As I'm processing what you wrote, I'm thinking I cannot control the crisis. And the other two take some time to develop. Obviously confidence takes some time. And the cause takes some clarifying I think. Obviously the Gospel is the cause, but pushing through distractions and getting to the very heart of the Gospel takes a little time to develop and learn and get rooted in my own heart. But you said it well, I'm in the learning process. Its frustrating and fun all at the same time.

And yes, definitely outpunted my coverage with Shannon. She is a gem!

Thanks for the words!

I think you'll find godly, anointed assertiveness arising out of one of three chambers of your heart - a cause, a crisis, or an area of unique confidence. (Has to be from God - they all start with "C", amen?)

David's own leadership emerged when faced with a cause (remember his question to the armies of Israel - "Is there not a cause?"). When something stirs you to the point that, regardless of what others do, your sword is drawn, you will find your leadership.

Leadership emerges in times of crisis, when you don't have the luxury of thinking about good form or what's proper. You just act, and tell others how to act, and figure you'll sort out the hurt feelings later.

Confidence is an important issue, but it's not a feeling, nor is it the same as faith. Confidence arises when you take action based on what you know, in spite of what you may not know or what you may fear.

Your reflections, my friend, are those of one who is learning to lead himself. Soon others WILL follow. And I happen to think you have an AWESOME encourager. Seems as if you're like most guys when you got married - you outpunted your coverage.

Just MHO.

Hey, bud.

I'm interested in your take on what a relationship with Christ has done to your identity. I've never read a saved person referred to as a "sinner," except in past tense. How CAN Paul refer to that bunch of immature babies in Corinth as "saints" in 1 Corinthians 1?

The key to self esteem, it seems to me, is when the "self" is so hidden in Christ that we walk in genuine humility - not beat-me-up-I-suck shame, or outta-my-way-I-rock pride.

Good stuff. We should start a small group. :-)
